SUMMARY:Bubble trouble: understanding links between water management and methane emissions in the Pacific Northwest reservoirs
DESCRIPTION:John Harrison\, School of the Environment\n\n Wednesday\, 9 March 2016\nPACCAR Bldg (PETB) – Room 202\n 3-4pm \nAlthough dams and the reservoirs they create provide a number of important services to the communities in which they reside they also have been associated with a number of environmental concerns\, including the production of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4).  It is well-established that reservoirs collectively constitute a globally important CH4 source\, but the factors controlling reservoir CH4 emissions are not particularly well-understood.  It is possible that clever reservoir management could mitigate CH4 emissions\, but to realize this possibility\, an improved understanding of reservoir CH4 emissions is necessary.  To develop this understanding\, my research group has been studying reservoir CH4 emissions in several Pacific NW reservoirs with contrasting watershed and management characteristics.  I will present some insights from this ongoing investigation.\n\nAMS information forthcoming

SUMMARY:Pathways to Animal Domestication- a Continuing Journey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Melinda Zeder- Department of Anthropology Lipe Scholar\nSenior Scientist\, Program in Human Ecology and Archaeobiology\, Department of Anthropology\, National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution \nThursday March 10th\, 2016 | 4:10pm |  College Hall 125  | WSU – Pullman\n \nPathways to Animal Domestication- a Continuing Journey\nAnimal domestication represents a milestone in the history of humans\, and of the planet we inhabit. Exploring the long history of the diverse and continuing pathways that humans and animal traveled into domestication\, learning how and when they first embarked on these journeys\, tracing the twists and turns they took along the way is vital to understanding where we come from\, how we arrived where we are today and what these pathways will lead us to into the future. This lecture looks at the universal features of animal domestication and its impact on animal domesticates. It brings together archaeology\, genetics and animal sciences to trace the pathways that animals and their human partners have followed and continue to follow into domestication. It explores some of the issues that must be confronted- ethical\, ecological\, social- as we continue to push the frontiers of animal domestication and reshape the lives of all animals living within an increasing pervasive human sphere. \n

SUMMARY:Learning\, Mining and Graphs- Distinguished Speaker Series in Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Tina Eliassi-Rad  |  Associate Professor of Computer Science  |  Rutgers University \nThursday\, March 10\, 2016 |  7pm  |  Goertzen Communication Addition 21 \nDistinguished Speaker Series in Data Science- Learning\, Mining and Graphs \nIn this talk\, I will discuss three dependent graph-mining problems ranging from theory to algorithms to applications. (1) Measuring tie-strength: Given a set of people and a set of events attended by them\, how should we measure connectedness or tie strength between each pair of persons? The underlying assumption is that attendance at mutual events produces an implicit social network between people. (2) Role discovery: given a graph\, how can we automatically discover roles (or functions) of nodes? Roles should compactly represent structural behaviors of nodes and generalize across various graphs. (3) Network similarity: Given two networks (without known node-correspondences)\, how should we measure similarity between them? This problem occurs frequently in many real-world applications such as efficacy of transfer learning\, re-identification\, and change detection.

SUMMARY:Household headship\, mobility and food security in rural Tanzania
DESCRIPTION:Household headship\, mobility and food security in rural Tanzania: Insights for research and agricultural development in the global south \nDr. John Parkins\, Professor of Sociology\, University of Alberta \nWednesday\, March 30 | 12:00-1:30 |  CUE 518 \nIn this seminar I present results of two recent studies on the relationship between gender and food security in rural Tanzania. These studies were undertaken within a larger interdisciplinary project involving the adoption of dairy goats and root crops to enhance local food production in 120 rural households. Drawing on household survey data (n = 520)\, the first study provides conceptual and empirical refinements on gender and agriculture by examining how household food consumption is influenced by (1) household headship structures and (2) gender-specific differences in the ownership of household resources. The second study draws on 66 in-depth interviews and interpretive inquiry to identify gendered mobilities\, including issues of culture and stigma that inhibits the integration of women into the agricultural sector.

NKN operates as a federally compliant academic service center to provide secure data storage; database and application programming; hosting of web sites\, databases and virtual machines; and consulting regarding research metadata\, policies\, and proposal development. NKN supports approximately thirty different research projects\, large and small\, with the goal of helping researchers efficiently access and use data and computing tools in their research. NKN also participates and partners with national and international data management initiatives for research data management. \nThis talk with overview the evolution of NKN\, describe some of the projects and activities NKN supports\, and opportunities for collaboration in training and cyberinfrastructure to support science.
