SUMMARY:Urban Food-Energy-Water Summit
DESCRIPTION:Woodinville\, Wash. – An interactive summit focusing on the future of the food system in the greater Seattle metropolitan area will be held on Friday\, November 18\, at the Brightwater Convention Center. \nHosted by Washington State University (WSU) Metro Food Energy Water Seed Grant Research Team\, the Urban Food-Energy-Water Summit provides an opportunity for the public to gain a deeper understanding of food\, energy and water (FEW) interdependence in the greater Seattle area. A morning keynote address and panel discussion will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. and is open to the public. This will include presentations about research and discussions addressing the need for integrated natural resource management approaches. The panel discussion will be a forum for diverse stakeholders to share their perspectives on local food and agriculture. \nA by-invitation afternoon breakout session and luncheon will be held after the public portion of the Summit from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants will discuss the various characteristics of resilient regional food systems. They will also assist in identifying future research directions that will support local decision makers when developing policies. Please contact Liz Allen if you would like an invitation to the afternoon session. \nThose interested in attending are asked to RSVP at www.urbanfew.brownpapertickets.com. For more information about this summit\, visit www.metrocenter.wsu.edu/metrofew-summit2016. To learn more about the Urban Food\, Energy and Water project\, visit http://metrocenter.wsu.edu/metrofew/. \nContact: \nLiz Allen\, lizb.allen@wsu.edu\, 774-437-2819

SUMMARY:Skagit Basin Water Mitigation Feasibility Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Brady\, School of Economic Sciences\, WSU\nWed. Feb 1\, 2017 | 3:10 pm | PACCAR Bldg (PETB) Room 202 \nIn 2013\, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled against a 2001 amendment that set aside groundwater reservations for development within the Skagit River Basin.  As a consequence\, hundreds of properties no longer have a secure\, uninterruptible water right. The objective of this study is to identify the least cost mitigation option in a spatially explicit manner for all of the properties whose groundwater rights were invalidated by the 2013 Supreme Court ruling. The core analysis focuses on piping and trucking water for streamflow augmentation\, but we provide coarse comparisons to other alternatives\, such as storage reservoirs for winter flow capture\, trucking and piping for direct consumption\, and rainwater capture based on information from existing studies. Further\, while we focus on mitigation for the 451 properties developed since April of 2001\, we provide several general results relating to water provision for future development in the otherwise closed sub-basins \nThis project was funded through the Engrossed Senate Bill No. 6589 and administered through the Department of Ecology\, State of Washington Water Research Center and WSU.  Co-authors include: J. Padowski\, Q. Yang\, E. Jessup\, and J. Yoder. Project development\, coordination\, and review was accomplished with the help of David Christensen\, Thomas Buroker\, John Rose\, Tom Culhane and Barb Anderson at the WA Department of Ecology.
