SUMMARY:CEREO Seminar: The Hunger Games: A Case-Study of Climate Impacts and Women Farmers’ Adaptations in Ghana
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Glazebrook\nProfessor and Director of the School of Politics\, Philosophy and Public Affairs \nPACCAR Environmental Technology Building\, Room 202 \nWomen farmers in the global South have been adapting to a changing climate for some time. This paper examines the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food security in Africa\, and presents a case-study detailing adaptation strategies of women farmers in the Upper Eastern Region of Ghana. Conclusions assess the consequences of adaptation on nutrition\, health\, and childhood development. Recommendations are made to promote distributive\, intergenerational\, climate\, gender\, and food justice in international climate policy. Preliminary assessment of the December 2015 Paris agreement reached at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP) is made against these recommendations\, with particular attention to the Gender Decision taken at COP 19 in Doha\, Qatar in 2012. \n

SUMMARY:CEREO Seminar: The CEREO Newsroom
DESCRIPTION:The CEREO Newsroom: a Resource for Communicating Research\, Training Students\, and Meeting NSF Broader Impacts Requirements \nJason Williams\, Civil & Environmental Engineering\nTodd Norton\, Murrow College of Communications\nLucrezia Paxson\, Murrow College of Communications\nRyan Risenmay\, Murrow College of Communications \nLocation: PACCAR Bldg (PETB) 135 \nThis seminar will summarize opportunities available to WSU faculty and students through the CEREO Newsroom (https://cereo.wsu.edu/cereo-newsroom/). Founded in 2014 through a CEREO seed grant\, the CEREO Newsroom pairs undergraduate Murrow communications students with graduate students conducting environmental research. Under the guidance of Murrow faculty\, the student teams create multimedia packages (videos and written articles) that address environmental problems and the research graduate students are doing to help solve those problems. Projects completed to date include profiles of WSU research focused on drought-resilient wheat breeding\, fish movement in marine protected areas\, stream biogeochemistry\, and ecological effects of nitrogen deposition at Mt. Rainier. Several example multimedia packages will be presented during the seminar. In contrast to other communications resources available (WSU communications or self-promotion of research)\, newsroom products are created by student teams and emphasize student training and experiential learning. Newsroom projects consequently are a unique and compelling way to meet NSF broader impacts or other similar grant requirements. The Newsroom has the infrastructure and expertise in place to support new projects\, including those associated with WSU proposals currently in preparation for the upcoming NSF Food-Energy-Water grant deadline. Attend the seminar or visit https://cereo.wsu.edu/cereo-newsroom/ to learn more and see examples of the high quality student-generated products the CEREO Newsroom could work with you to create.

SUMMARY:Bubble trouble: understanding links between water management and methane emissions in the Pacific Northwest reservoirs
DESCRIPTION:John Harrison\, School of the Environment\n\n Wednesday\, 9 March 2016\nPACCAR Bldg (PETB) – Room 202\n 3-4pm \nAlthough dams and the reservoirs they create provide a number of important services to the communities in which they reside they also have been associated with a number of environmental concerns\, including the production of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4).  It is well-established that reservoirs collectively constitute a globally important CH4 source\, but the factors controlling reservoir CH4 emissions are not particularly well-understood.  It is possible that clever reservoir management could mitigate CH4 emissions\, but to realize this possibility\, an improved understanding of reservoir CH4 emissions is necessary.  To develop this understanding\, my research group has been studying reservoir CH4 emissions in several Pacific NW reservoirs with contrasting watershed and management characteristics.  I will present some insights from this ongoing investigation.\n\nAMS information forthcoming

SUMMARY:Pathways to Animal Domestication- a Continuing Journey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Melinda Zeder- Department of Anthropology Lipe Scholar\nSenior Scientist\, Program in Human Ecology and Archaeobiology\, Department of Anthropology\, National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution \nThursday March 10th\, 2016 | 4:10pm |  College Hall 125  | WSU – Pullman\n \nPathways to Animal Domestication- a Continuing Journey\nAnimal domestication represents a milestone in the history of humans\, and of the planet we inhabit. Exploring the long history of the diverse and continuing pathways that humans and animal traveled into domestication\, learning how and when they first embarked on these journeys\, tracing the twists and turns they took along the way is vital to understanding where we come from\, how we arrived where we are today and what these pathways will lead us to into the future. This lecture looks at the universal features of animal domestication and its impact on animal domesticates. It brings together archaeology\, genetics and animal sciences to trace the pathways that animals and their human partners have followed and continue to follow into domestication. It explores some of the issues that must be confronted- ethical\, ecological\, social- as we continue to push the frontiers of animal domestication and reshape the lives of all animals living within an increasing pervasive human sphere. \n

SUMMARY:Learning\, Mining and Graphs- Distinguished Speaker Series in Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Tina Eliassi-Rad  |  Associate Professor of Computer Science  |  Rutgers University \nThursday\, March 10\, 2016 |  7pm  |  Goertzen Communication Addition 21 \nDistinguished Speaker Series in Data Science- Learning\, Mining and Graphs \nIn this talk\, I will discuss three dependent graph-mining problems ranging from theory to algorithms to applications. (1) Measuring tie-strength: Given a set of people and a set of events attended by them\, how should we measure connectedness or tie strength between each pair of persons? The underlying assumption is that attendance at mutual events produces an implicit social network between people. (2) Role discovery: given a graph\, how can we automatically discover roles (or functions) of nodes? Roles should compactly represent structural behaviors of nodes and generalize across various graphs. (3) Network similarity: Given two networks (without known node-correspondences)\, how should we measure similarity between them? This problem occurs frequently in many real-world applications such as efficacy of transfer learning\, re-identification\, and change detection.
