SUMMARY:CEREO- Jan Boll
DESCRIPTION:“Interdisciplinary Water Resources Education at the University of Idaho” \nIn 2006\, faculty at the University of Idaho started the Waters of the West Program\, and in 2007\, they launched the Water Resources (WR) graduate degree program under the Colleges of Graduate Studies and Law.  This was the culmination of several years of preparation. The WR Program includes M.S./Ph.D. degrees in Water Resources\, with three option areas: Engineering & Science; Science & Management; and Law\, Management & Policy; and concurrent M.S./ J.D. and Ph.D./ J.D. degrees in any of the three option areas. The new degree is a coordinated effort to create interdisciplinary study options in water resources at the university. This interdisciplinary WR Program encompasses engineering\, natural and social sciences\, to advance water resources education\, research and\, outreach throughout Idaho. The term “water resources” is used here in the broadest sense.  It is the study of how water moves through and interacts with natural systems\, and the physical\, social\, and economic aspects of human interaction with the water cycle.  In this talk\, Dr. Boll will outline the Waters of the West and WR program\, the nuts and bolts of developing and managing a university-wide program\, and how this led to the successful collaborative NSF-IGERT grant. \nSponsored by CEREO\n\nDr. Jan Boll is the Director of the Waters of the West (WoW) water resources graduate program\, the environmental science program and the professional science masters program at the University of Idaho.  He is also professor in watershed hydrology and water quality. Dr. Boll has a Ph.D. from Cornell University (1995) and M.S. from the University of Idaho (1988) and Wageningen Agricultural University (1988). \nWednesday\, 15 April 2015\nETRL 101\, 2-3pm\nWashington State University\, Pullman \nAMS Connections: Puyallup REC\, WSU Tri-Cities\, WSU Vancouver\, WSU Spokane\nThe dial up number for all sites for this event is 5706040\n\nThis talk will also be recorded. Check the CEREO website for availability.

SUMMARY:CEREO- John Petrie
DESCRIPTION:Hydraulic geometry: Looking at an old concept in new ways\n\nSponsored by CEREO\n \nJohn Petrie\, PhD\n Assistant Professor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\,  WSU-Pullman\n \nThroughout history\, humans have relied on rivers for a variety of uses including transportation\, food\, water for drinking and irrigation\, renewable energy\, and recreation. River channels also form the physical basis for riparian ecosystems with flow and sediment processes in the channel coevolving with flora and fauna. This process often leads to a state of dynamic equilibrium where the channel is essentially stable in form. Both anthropogenic activities and natural events may alter flow and sediment dynamics in the channel\, disrupting this equilibrium. Disruptions may be due to direct or indirect impacts and often have significant environmental effects. Direct impacts occur within the channel and include channelization\, instream structures\, and gravel mining. Indirect impacts occur outside of the channel and alter the magnitude and timing of water and sediment delivery to streams. Examples of indirect impacts include changes in land use or climate. Hydraulic geometry\, or regime equations\, is a tool to relate hydrologic variables to channel form. While this concept is more than 50 years old\, regional regime equations now form the basis of many stream restoration projects. This presentation revisits the concept of hydraulic geometry and investigates new applications. Using example data\, it is demonstrated how hydraulic geometry clarifies the physics underlying fluvial processes as well as predicts generalized changes in channel form. \nWednesday April 8th\, 2-3 pm\,  Lighty 405\n \n  \nAMS Connections: Puyallup REC\, WSU Tri-Cities\, WSU Vancouver\, WSU Spokane\nThe dial up number for all sites for this event is 5706040\n\nThis talk will also be recorded.  Check the CEREO website for availability.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Title: Visiting Writer Series Spring 2015\n\nSpeaker: Robert Michael Pyle & Allison Cobb\n\nLocation: Museum of Fine Art\, Fine Arts Center \nURL: http://libarts.wsu.edu/english/visitingwriterseries.html \n “Allison Cobb and Robert Michael Pyle will be giving a joint reading and question and answer session on the evening of the 31st\, focused on ecoreading.\nRobert Michael Pyle\, author of twelve books and many essays\, stories and poems\, is one of America’s best-known environmental writers and naturalists. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His 1987 book\, Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land\, won the John Burroughs Medal for Distinguished Nature Writing. He writes for Orion Magazine and is a trip leader for the National Wildlife Foundation’s annual Family Nature Summits. Pyle\, among other things\, studies Lepidoptera\, an order of moths and butterflies.\nAllison Cobb works in poetry\, nonfiction prose\, and visual arts to address issues of landscape\, public space\, politics\, and ecology. In Plastic: An Autobiography\, she tracks the reappearance of plastic in the environment. Her published works include Born2 (poetry)\, about Los Alamos and the legacy of the atomic bomb\, and Green-Wood\, a hybrid work that addresses histories and bodies—the war dead buried at the fabled Green-Wood cemetery in Brooklyn and her own in her attempts to conceive a child. Cobb was a 2009 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow\, a 2011 Oregon Arts Commission Fellow\, and currently works for the Environmental Defense Fund. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Common Reading Program\, School of Biological Sciences\, University of Idaho\, and CEREO.”
